Wells celebrates The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Project Factory in partnership with WOWFest secured £18,500 in grants to put on the celebrations in Wells on Sunday 5th June.   The aim of the funding was to create an occasion which celebrated the arts and created a legacy for Wells.    Community Groups from across Wells came together to plan a huge day of celebrations.

Creating lasting Jubilee memories

We wanted to created a lasting tribute to the Queen and something that people could have as a keepsake, a reminder to the special day.

Project Factory thought it was important to include voices from across the community.  The more senior members were ably represented by the Lawrence Centre and the most junior by school children from St Cuthbert’s.  A star contribution came from a local resident The Hon. James Drummond, who was a Page of Honour at the Coronation in 1953.

Members of The Lawrence Centre were delighted with their copies of the souvenir Jubilee Brochure:  A Tribute to Her Majesty The Queen from the people of Wells.

Project Factory distributed copies to the primary school children of Wells as a lasting moment of the day.

Workshops a huge success

One hundred and sixty children signed up for the free cookery workshops as part of the funding we were granted for the Jubilee celebrations.   Participants had 45 minutes to create 'Jubilee Crowns' a scone mixture covered in tomato sauce and cheese and rolled into pinwheels.  Simon Gray from the Fun Kitchen wants children to eat healthily and he believes the best way is to get children cooking early using a variety of ingredients.

The workshops were one of the highlights of the day for some of our younger members of the community.

Karen Deverell said: “ We took a little friend aged 5 to the Fun Kitchen, this involved mixing, kneading, rolling and generally having a great time with egg, flour and butter.  Under Chef Simon's instruction, all children put on proper chefs hats and aprons and ended up with Pizza Swirls to be proud of.  What a fabulous idea, something a little different for children and quite enjoyable for the grown ups too!”
