Lantern Making Workshop

  • Portway Annexe Portway Avenue Wells, England, BA5 2QF United Kingdom (map)

Use your creative flair on your own or with your family or a group to make a stunning lantern out of tissue paper and willow. At our lantern making workshops we will provide you with basic instruction and the materials to create your own unique lantern. The theme for 2024 is Festivals, so draw your idea in advance and bring it with you.

For each booking we are asking for a £5 donation to pay for one lantern kit, so please book a ticket for each person requiring a kit. Each kit will contain what you need to create a lantern, but you may need to buy extra willow and poles for more complicated lanterns. Please bring or buy battery operated lights to light up your lantern. If you have secateurs, they would be useful too. You will be able to buy more lantern kits and lights at the venue if you need them.

These workshops are suitable for all. Children under 7 will need help and must be accompanied by one adult per child. Children must be supervised at all times. Please take care when using secateurs and willows. Families who do not follow basic safety instructions will be asked to finish their lanterns at home.

If you are taking part or coming to watch, the Lantern Procession will gather in Wells Cathedral and leave on Saturday 20th January at 6.30 pm to parade around the Cathedral Green, Penniless Porch, Bishop's Eye, the Bishop's Palace, ending in Market Place.

The Light Up Wells Lantern Procession and workshops are delivered by Project Factory CIC and kindly supported by Wells City Council and The Portway Annexe, Wells Cathedral and The Bishop's Palace.
