DOUBT Schools Project 2023
Hundreds of young people creating one collaborative artwork
In spring 2023, Project Factory invited pupils from local schools to respond creatively to DOUBT, Antony Gormley’s cast-iron figure on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.
Working from a project devised by artist and educator Dan Vidler, KS1–3 pupils created individual clay figures while exploring ideas of sculpture, place and belonging. Their figures came together in a collaborative installation displayed at Wells Cathedral during the May half-term holiday.
Each child’s figure was a small but essential part of the finished installation—reflecting the project’s wider themes of collaboration, community and common purpose.
In spring 2023 KS1-3 pupils from local schools participated in a project designed by Dan Vidler that was on display in the Cathedral during the May bank holiday. Instructions for making your own clay figure can be found here
In response to Antony Gormley’s work, on the West Front of Wells Cathedral, children in local schools created their own figures, using clay. Location was a significant aspect in the perception of their work - which reflected Gormley’s thinking behind the position of DOUBT.
“I have chosen this niche for its position and its visibility: the book at the end of the bookshelf. The work attempts to invoke the feeling of being isolated and exposed on this corner of a Gothic masterpiece.”

The education teams at Wells Cathedral, Wells & Mendip Museum and the Bishop’s Palace put together a package to reflect the rich variety of potential study areas.
