Lantern making workshop

Once Upon a Time — Lantern-Making Workshops

Make a lantern inspired by stories, legends and fairy tales for the Wells Lantern Parade on Saturday 16 January 2027 at 6.30pm.

Our friendly workshops welcome children, families and adults. We’ll provide materials, basic guidance and practical help. Bring an idea if you have one — a simple design is a good starting point!

Where and when

The Scout Hut, Kennion Road, Wells

• Saturday 9 January 2027 –1pm - 4pm

Larger or more complicated lanterns may take longer than one session and need to be finished at home.

Materials and payment

Materials cost £6 per small lantern. Larger designs may need more than one set of materials.

Battery-operated fairy lights cost an additional £2.50 per string, or you can bring your own.

Pay at the workshop by cash or bank transfer. Advance bank transfer is also welcome; please email emma@projectfactory.uk for payment details. Donations are welcome.

Book a lantern-making workshop

Please complete one booking form per family or group, including everyone attending, even accompanying adults. Select your session and tell us how many lanterns you intend to make so we can plan materials and space.

Safety and supervision

Lantern-making involves long willow rods, glue and tools such as secateurs. Please follow the workshop team’s instructions and take care when handling materials and tools.

All children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult throughout. Children under eight need one adult per child.

Please use battery-operated lights only — no candles or naked flames.

Accessibility

If you have access requirements or would like to discuss support before attending, please email emma@projectfactory.uk.

Changes and cancellations

If you can no longer attend or need to change your session, please email emma@projectfactory.uk as soon as possible so we can offer your places to others.

Taking part in the parade

The parade begins inside Wells Cathedral before continuing outdoors. In wet weather, the whole event will take place inside the Cathedral. Cathedral admission is subject to safety capacity limits and cannot be guaranteed.
